from Mom

From mom:
I feel like I was running and hit a brick wall head on. I bragged that Lily was my money bag due to her surgeries and my Benny Boy was my little healthy 30 lbs. ball with never one thing wrong. I am shocked, saddened and my heart literally hurts when I look at those big brown eyes looking at me. I can't stop the tears from flowing. I try not to let him see me cry because he will come over, sit in front of me and stare. I am sure he is telling me a thousand words. I have had pets my entire life, every one so special but the thing about Benny and Lily is that I found them on my own. They're "mine."

All of your words, thoughtfulness and generosity is extremely overwhelming. I write these words because you understand. There is an outpouring of support from you, Facebook and Twitter friends. I don't know what to say except I love my Benny boy. (and of course my monster Lily)
I look at Lily who appears a bit depressed. She lays close to Benny, which she used to prefer a little space. She refuses to be alone. I will comfort both, and continue to make them as happy and comfortable as they can be. Frankie and a friend Khristine from the French Bulldog Rescue Network said to me in the same day, it's about the quality of Benny's life, not the quantity.  I do know that for sure. I would never want him to suffer.

Thank you again friends. It means the world to us.

  16. Having worked as a vet tech for years it made me constantly sad and angry when people would keep a pet living when they knew it was suffering. It is HARD to let go of something you love more than life itself but keeping it going for yourself is not right - the best interest of the pet should always be at the forefront - so yes I agree - it is the QUALITY of the life - not the quantity. I too have had dogs and cats all my life and have many such battles when cancer or some other disease has taken my furbabies from me - but my memories of each and every one is them is so special because I don't have have to remember them dying slowly and painfully - instead I held their paws - cried buckets of tears and kissed their beautiful heads as they slipped gently from our world and over the rainbow bridge. The respect of dying gently is the final and most precious gift we can give our furbabies. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all - lots of hugs.

  19. My heart aches for you while you watch Benny go through this. And, I am one to totally agree, it's the quality, not the quantity. With all of Corbin's issues, I have come to realize he's not going to live a long life, but whatever years he does have will be lived to the fullest. Benny is showered with your love every day and has enjoyed every moment with you. Every new moment is just another day to make his life fulfilling. We love Benny and Lily and hope everything turns out for the best!

  24. My mum and I have not posted on your blog before, but my mum wanted to say that all of our thoughts and prayers are with you. So far, she has only lost cats to age, illness, etc. We agree that it is the quality of the life left. right now we are fostering a 14 year old poodle who has some issues (incontinence and cataracts). Her original owners had her for all her life until they got a divorce -- not sure what happened, but the first foster mum she went to returned her in anger and told foster group to put her to sleep cos of her incontinence; and the foster group hesitated to give her to us cos of it, but my mum said "bring 'er over and we'll just put down more pee pads!!" So that is what we do. Mum jokes that she takes April out and she pees and poops; brings her back and she pees and poops!!! Mum has learned not to walk around without lights on cost of the poops and pees!!!!!!

Anyway, she is going off at an tangent (always a problem with these old broads (she is 71 after all) -- oops she is gonna be mad at me for that comment, lol. but anyway, know that all of us (2 dogs, 2 adult cats and 2 foster kitties) and thinking of you constantly and have all our paws crossed and mum has her legs crossed for you.

  25. I will continue to hope and pray for Benny. I hope you will have as much quality time with him as possible...he knows how much you love him and that you will do the best you can for him.

  33. Praying for you and your Frenchie family. I lost my 5 1/2 year old Frenchie, Lola, to a brain tumor two years ago. I was blindsided. Her life had just begun. Life is so fragile and all we have is the moment we are in. She may not run by my side, but she has made her furever home in my heart, and thus still with me at all times. For some reason this is the plan and I'm so sorry.

I've never met you or your furbabies but have followed your blog and then your FB page when I was first blogging for Schnauzer-tude!

You, Benny and Lily have been on my mind since this started. You cry and we cry with you.. but for now chin up, be strong... Because whatever time he has on this earth should be filled with nothing but positive and healing thoughts.

Thank you for keeping us posted, I can only imagine your heart aching while writing this post... it's not easy, we all know it and no matter how many family pets we have or how often we go through it, it seems to get harder. BUT you are not alone...

A huge hug for you from me and tons of belly rubs to both Benny and Lily.

Lily probably is feeling a bit down, but it is good for her to go through this with Benny. We think it will help her understand better and deal with things long term much better. Like you, I've always had animals in my life, and each relationship is special. But there was one little girl, a pit bull puppy I rescued off the streets in San Francisco, who became my most beloved friend of all. Maybe because we were really rescuing each other.

  83. Hi, I'm so sorry to read about Benny. (First time stopping by your blog. Molly the Wally sent us.) It's so true what you say about remembering quality over quantity. Our last pup had bone cancer and passed at only 2 1/2 years old. She was definitely cheated in terms of quantity, but she had an amazing life and she taught us so much. Hang in there.
