Being Safe: July 4th

Ms. Penny asks:
We read several tips on how to keep your pups safe on the upcoming July 4th holiday.
We were curious, what do you do keep Lily and Edward calm. Thank you!!

Listen to music?

Mother: This may sound funny, but I blast our TV VERY loud. It helps to muffle the sound of the fireworks.  It works.

The ASPCA suggestions here.

  1. We turn the radio and the TV up too. The boys have never been to bad with fireworks but I still like to drown it out sometimes since the big fireworks display goes off behind our house.

  5. That's a good idea. We turn the TV up, so the doggies don't get scared by the loud fireworks.

  9. I do not have to worry about fireworks as much as I do the guns going off especially around 11pm....that is what drives me and the weiner dog, Rosie nutty. I have huge fans in the house that make alot of noise, so hopefully that will cut out some of the noise down to where were not thinking about those stray bullets flying towards our little house.

  10. We may be doing that here too -since Thunder left us, Ciara is absolutely terrified of fireworks. Even though they are illegal in our city, there are a lot of stupid peeps in our neighborhood who still shoot them off. We hope they forget to buy them this year.

  13. Howdy Lily and Edward. We don't have to worry about 4 July here in Oz but we do have fireworks in our little town at Christmas and since last year I, Stella, developed a fear of big noises, sigh. Mum will try the loud TV this year for me. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  16. LOL! That's funny! Thankfully Bailie and I are not bothered by noises and since Katie is losing her hearing, it doesn't bother her either.

  17. I don't have an issue with loud booms of fireworks or thunder or anything..but you know who does? My DAD! He will cover his ears and whimper a bit. He even has special noise-canceling headphones to drown loud BOOMS out. He has very sensitive hearing.

  18. We are lucky that we aren't bothered by those noises. We just bark at them and tell them to be quiet.

  19. I am the only one that gets freaked out by fireworks so I sit with my peeps and if they go outside to partake in the festivities brother builds me a safe fort so I feel secure.

  21. This really works! We turn our television volume up and put on Bentley's anxiety wrap. IT helps during thunderstorms too.

  22. We are in earshot of the city park where all the fireworks are shot off. Plus the baseball stadium that shoots off fireworks after home games. Plus Tallulah is very noise reactive. No bueno. We use this http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/stress-free-calmplex-supplement-dogs-calming-relief
It isn't a tranquilizer, but it takes the edge off anxiety. For the scheduled big displays, we also get a distraction like a frozen rib bone or ice cream. We take the Calmplex regularly during fireworks weekends too. It helps even overnight when unfriendly neighbors shoot them off at 3 am.
