Apoquel

We have received numerous questions regarding Apoquel.

Does it work?
Have we tried it?
I heard it's the miracle drug.

Apoquel is for dogs 12 months or older used to control "pruritus
associated with allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis...."

please read about Apoquel on their website
sneezing and itchies

Mother:

From our October 10, 2014 post: and an update
Apoquel, according to the Vet was difficult to get and back ordered. I tried it on Lily and Edward. I was convinced I did find a miracle cure for Lily. The first three days she stopped licking and itching completely. I was shocked. However, day five brought her right back to her licking, redness and a yeast infection. I switched her immediately back to Atopica. As far as Edward, it did not work on him at all. He became itchier if that is at all possible.
Do I recommend Apoquel?
My experience.....No.
However, what does not work for me, may work for you.
This is my opinion only...this drug may work for your pup.

I do know three people that have tried Apoquel and experienced the same results as I did.

  3. It works on Henri very well so far ( been on sice spring) but he did get an awful rash from some bugs on his underbelly. He always does a few times in summer and needs antibiotics too. I also have to up his dose at this time. Now Johnny vomits from every drug plus he had cancerous tumor removed with no good margins on his rear leg. I think he vomits from Apoquel but he vomits from most drugs. I am certain he is allergic to tomatoes as when they ripen he is stealing them all the time and he breaks out.
Neither of my dogs have that awful Pyoderma or Malassezia. I had an English BD that did and it was a never ending battle and she had to be on prednisone or would of chewed her foot off for sure. One thing I know from 20 years working for a vet is people often stop antibiotics too soon when they are prescribed. I mean way too soon it is a constant daily head bagging conversation I talk about. I know there are cases of infected ears that never heal etc. but most people just do not do as they are told to do and also do not restrict diet with includes treats, type of heartworm pill etc...
SO far apoquel is my best friend for one and not the other. Johnny at least knows "Stop that licking" where as Henri doesn't seem to even know his name.

  5. LILY MY MOM USED TO HAVE THE SKIN ITCHES TOO. SHE TRIED ALL KINDS OF $$$ RXs topical and lotions. Nothing worked 100%. Then one night after her shower she decided to just use Aveeno hand lotion on her legs. Lo and behold the next day she had 50% improvement in all the red itches. Aveeno is all she uses on her skin now.
of course it isn't for K9s but mom knows how excited you were to find something that worked.

  9. Very helpful info! We are fortunate that we don't get the itchies like that, but we know pups who get it and it can be so horrible!!!

  11. I (Laika) have terrible itchies. The vet don't know why so I get Prednisone to keep it away. I works.

  12. What great information! With Arty's itchies, Atopica (plus occasional benedryl) seem to keep the itchies to a minimum along with weekly bathes and daily wipedowns.

  13. We never even heard of it before. BTW, a couple days ago you said in a comment that you were sending pics of W & L for the rodeo photos. We never received any pics. Just wanted you to know in case you sent them.

  14. I'm really glad there's no skin issues (so long as Nola avoids her allergens) here.

  15. It's great to hear your honest opinion. We might try it for R... but I won't get my hopes up. The poor guy gets so itchy during the summer.
