Acupuncture For Dogs

Ms. D asks:
Have you ever tried acupuncture for Lily's back?
Mother:
Although we never have, we did consider it at one time. We have known friends on our blog that have used acupuncture for their dogs and horses. The stories we have heard were all positive.  petMD has more information and a video. We see the treatment as beneficial. What are your thoughts?

  1. We know of a place in a town not far from us that does that on all animals.....we have heard good results.

  2. I didn't believe in acupuncture until I was faced with a $10,000 colic surgery plus emergency hospital transport and an 80% mortality rate or try acupuncture and if it doesn't work the bill would be $10,300. I decided to try the acupuncture, and my horse reversed from on her death bed to fairly normal behavior within 45 minutes. It works!

  3. we never tried that but we heard good things about that needle-thingy... it saved the life of our cousins horse as no vet had a solution for the poor guy.

  4. Hi Lily! I get acupuncture every other week and it's made a HUGE difference in my ability to move around. Plus, my tech Jaime feeds me tweets while Dr. Sarah is placing the needles. It's a win-win!!

  8. We've heard it can have good results. I don't think there are a lot of doggy acupuncturists out there, though.

  10. I think it depends on your dog and what the condition it is, hopefully we'll never have to consider it. Love Dolly

  11. we have heard some good things about it - we wish there was someone in our area that did it for dogs as we would certainly try it. Mom wanted to know if you got her email about the amazon thing?

  18. We have to say that we've seen some "near-miracles" from acupuncture with our past dogs. One dog, a yellow Lab named S, was elderly and would wake up some mornings barely able to get up to walk (making us fear, each time, that we were at the "end"). We'd call our vet who would take him as an in-patient for the day and do 3 acupuncture sessions on him during the day. It seriously seemed like a miracle - how easily and painlessly he walked out of the vet clinic.

We have had other dogs who weren't helped by it... so I now always think it's worth trying a few sessions to see if it helps...

We are considering trying it to loosen up the muscles around R's bad elbow.

  20. Bentley had a pinched nerve in his lower back and had trouble getting up and down. He couldn't walk across the room without falling. Then the acupuncturist came to the house and gave him treatments. The first two didn't seem to do anything but after the third one he improved. Then he started getting better and better. After a couple months he could even run and climb stairs by himself.

He was so relaxed that he'd go to sleep with the needles in his back and after the treatment he'd be really hungry. It was great for him and I wouldn't hesitate to try it for the others.
