Environmental Allergies

Mr D asks:
Do any of Lily's doctors discuss increasing allergies in pets. I feel like I am constantly trying to keep these allergies under control.

Itchy face

Mother:
We have discussed the same issues with our vets and dermatologist. The doctor believes most symptoms/allergies are caused by environmental issues and not so much the food. I remember years ago, my dogs and friends dogs never had any food or allergy issues. Now that is all we discuss. Medicated shampoos, no grain diets, the fertilizers in the grass, the list goes on and on. The only suggestion we have, as we do, is to constantly work on keeping the allergies under control.

Medicated baths
Wash or wipe feet after every walk
100% pure aloe kept in the fridge to put on Lily and Edward's itchy chin
no grain diet
high quality food and treats
clean ears and teeth
weekly baths
100% coconut or fish oil mixed in their food
Gold Bond Medicated Powder prevents Lily from scratching her belly and arm pits

  1. We didn't know about that powder, we will remember that when Maggie bites on her paws. How is lily doing today?

  9. Arty has HORRIBLE allergies...thank you so much for the advice...Living in "the middle of no good vets" small town we don't have access to a skin specialist for him....so we are going to try a few of your routines and hope this will keep his itchies to a minimum!

Still sending Lily lots of POTP!

  13. We hear a lot about allergies with our friends and it certainly is NOT fun dealing with them. Happily no allergy issues here but isn't it just SAD that our environment can cause so many bad things! It really sounds like you're doing all you can to help Lily and Edward deal with their allergies.

    Hugs, Pam (and Sam)

  14. I have allergies too. My vet and mom has come to the conclusion: Prednisolone, 1 tablet every second day. Now I'm relieved because no itchiness any more. We know Prednisolon are not the best, but as my Vet said: It's better to have a good live without itchiness.

  15. Yep, I's da allergee queen... enviromental mostly. I has a holistic vet and a dermatologist, too. I takes sublingual allergen therapy, holistic supplements, several waterboardin'-- I mean baffs-- a week, etc. Ya wants to know anyfing 'bout allegees, ya can ask me... we've tried it, we research it all da time, and da onliest thing we haven't tried (and don't want to) is da Atopica and Apoquel cuz dey is immuno-suppresssants (I has a heart murmur and dat could give me heart disease, plus increased chances of cancer, etc.)... Occashunally I takes a tiny dose of steroid fur a few days and den tapers back off of it-- when I takes it, I takes a holistic supplement fur my liver, too... So far, da steroid ain't affected my liver, my numbers at my last check-up were all good.
    Allegees stink. Big time.

  18. Itchies are horrible. We're lucky that so far, we don't have them. Maybe it's because most pups are kept in such clean environments. We don't worry about that here. We're dirty, and SHE's a mess, too.

  19. You go, Mom! I think it's even harder for us to decide because our dogs can't talk.
