Go Ask Mother: A Raw Diet

Several friends have asked if a raw diet helps allergies. And if so, what and how do you feed your pup.

Mother: Honestly, we are not sure because we never tried it long term. We need your input

  3. We talked with our Vet, and he said the only way to keep the itches away from Laika is to give her prednison once in a while. She is mega allergic.

  5. we do a half and half mainly because it use to be so hard to find dog food that didn't have chicken, duck or turkey in it ..which Reilly is allergic too. Thankfully these days there are more option but I still prefer to give my guys big old raw bones to gnaw on. They love beef rib especially - lots of meat on them but the bones are too hard to break or splinter

  8. A very limited ingredient kibble seemed to help Greta a lot. But Mom had decided that her allergies were mostly environmental - grass, pollens and such

  9. Well I do eat raw sometimes, but mum doesn't like it as the critters were usually alive and running around before I got to them!!

  11. Honey the Great Dane (now over the Bridge) ate a raw diet and lived over 10 years. I believe that there are still links to her posts about her raw diet on her blog. Beyond that, I did enjoy Austin Towers' comment.

  14. We hoped that a raw diet would help Arty's allergies...but alas, his allergies are also environmental....We agree with Murphy and Stanley that Sojos does make eating raw easy...and Arty just loves them.

  15. My Husky Isis and I are a Pet Partners therapy dog team and unfortunately they don't allow their therapy dogs to eat raw food/treats, so we haven't tried it. I didn't realize it could potentially help allergies, interesting.

  16. I won't go back to kibble or home cooked for my dogs. This is the first time ever since I've had Nola she hasn't had seasonal allergies.

  17. We are not convinced about a raw diet. We do believe that dogs originally never ate grains but that doesn't mean they need to eat raw. I have food allergies and I am doing fine on a limited ingredient grain free diet. Love Dolly

  18. We too know that a lot of pups do the raw diet and love it. We have never tried it, but we do get the occasional raw bone or turkey neck. Yummers.

  21. We are thinking it is fine for those that want to have a raw diet, but it is also a fad like no carbs for people, or gluten free. It is not something everyone or every dog needs, but we are no experts. We have high quality food and are all quite healthy.
