Apoquel vs. Atopica

Mr. D asks:
We know Lily has been taking Atopica for her allergies. We also read you tried Apoquel. Any difference in her allergies since trying the new med.

Mother:
We were told Apoquel was the new miracle drug for "Control of pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis in dogs at least 12 months of age." The drug apparently has no side effects.

Apoquel, according to the Vet was also difficult to get and is back ordered. I tried it on Lily and Edward. I thought I did find a miracle cure for Lily. The first three days she stopped licking and itching completely. I was shocked. However, day five brought her right back to her licking, redness and a yeast infection. I switched her immediately back to Atopica. As far as Edward, it did not work on him at all. He became itchier if that is at all possible.
Do I recommend Apoquel? My experience-absolutely not.

This is my opinion only...this drug may work for your pup.

  1. It's so sad when you try a new treatment and after some good days things are as worse as before... and it's not easy to find the right treatment for that evil allergies...

  5. we found that too - neither of those worked for Reilly and the only thing we have found to help his severe allergies is the depo medral shots.

  8. Hello. We found your doggie blog via Frank and Ernie. Sorry to hear about your itchy problems. My colleague Joey dog gets itchies a lot too. We have to be careful what we feed him. He's allergic to certain foods. One misguided meatball, and he's got itchies again!
