Apoquel vs. Atopica

Mr. D asks:
We know Lily has been taking Atopica for her allergies. We also read you tried Apoquel. Any difference in her allergies since trying the new med.

We were told Apoquel was the new miracle drug for "Control of pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis and control of atopic dermatitis in dogs at least 12 months of age." The drug apparently has no side effects.

Apoquel, according to the Vet was also difficult to get and is back ordered. I tried it on Lily and Edward. I thought I did find a miracle cure for Lily. The first three days she stopped licking and itching completely. I was shocked. However, day five brought her right back to her licking, redness and a yeast infection. I switched her immediately back to Atopica. As far as Edward, it did not work on him at all. He became itchier if that is at all possible.
Do I recommend Apoquel? My experience-absolutely not.

This is my opinion only...this drug may work for your pup.

  1. It's so sad when you try a new treatment and after some good days things are as worse as before... and it's not easy to find the right treatment for that evil allergies...

  2. It's funny how different meds will work so differently depending on the dog!

  3. we are sorry about the itchy scratchies sometimes things work for some dogs and just dont work for others

  5. we found that too - neither of those worked for Reilly and the only thing we have found to help his severe allergies is the depo medral shots.

  6. All pups are different just the same as us humans some things work some don't,xx Rachel

  7. Do you any experience or knowledge to pass on regarding serving up only a raw diet for allergies?

  8. Hello. We found your doggie blog via Frank and Ernie. Sorry to hear about your itchy problems. My colleague Joey dog gets itchies a lot too. We have to be careful what we feed him. He's allergic to certain foods. One misguided meatball, and he's got itchies again!

  9. I Laika have a lot of itchies too.

  10. We are finding that out, it work for some and not others. I haven't tried either and my vet has never mentioned Atopica. Love Dolly

  11. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. So VERY MUCH sorry that it didn't work fur you.

Have you ever tried LOCAL.. RAW Honey in your foods... That helps SOME folks and Dawgs as well... butt it has to be LOCAL and RAW... We have a furend who is a Bee Keeper... and he USED to have LOTS of itchies and Sneezing and stuffs... and now... NONE of that... He has a teaspoon of honey from his hives... every day.

  12. Bummer, Lily and Edward. We know you and your mom had high hopes for the Apoquel.
